4 Essential Question Why is the South Carolina Young Adult Book Award program an important program for all high school teachers?

5 Presenters Meeting Outcomes
At the end, participants will: -know the SCYABA nominee list -have a synopsis of each book -understand the importance of SC Book Award program in SC -want to encourage students to participate -understand the ways they can participate in the program -understand the importance of reading -want to support their media centers and media specialists

6 SC Book Award Program 1976 1980 1993 2003 Children’s Book Award
Children’s Book Award Young Adult Book Award Junior Book Award Picture Book Award I’m hoping you all are somewhat familiar with the SC Book Award Program. If not, we are thrilled to be able to introduce them to you today. The program has been around since 1976 when the SC Association of School Librarians first introduced the Children’s Picture Book Award. Over the years, additional levels have been introduced culminating with the picture book award added in 2003.

7 Basic Program/Participation
How the program works is simple, your school librarian (or a teacher in your school if the librarian isn’t participating) purchases a minimum of half the 20 nominee titles for the year. Students read at least 3 of the YABA titles to be eligible to vote. In February, students vote for their favorite title. The media specialist or sponsoring teacher collects the votes and submits them to SCASL. In March at the SCASL annual conference the winners are announced.

8 Advanced Participation:
Banner Contest Booktrailer Contest NEW: Bookmark Contest (info TBA) There are additional ways for students (and teachers) to participate. We have a banner contest – North Augusta HS won 2nd place last year! In addition there is a Booktrailer contest. The trailers are a great option to traditional book reports! Both of these offer cash prizes to your school ($100, $75 and $50). Only one submission for each (banner/trailer) can be submitted from each school. New this year is a bookmark contest. Details are forthcoming; however, this is a prize for an individual STUDENT and only one first place cash prize of $50 will be awarded. Multiple submissions can be sent from a school. Keep a lookout on the scasl.net website for further details. 2nd Place Banner Winner North August HS!

9 Advanced Participation:
Why not join the Book Award Committee! Since you all are here I’m assuming you are all high school folks in one capacity or another: teacher, media specialist, administration, etc. As such you are eligible to serve on the YABA committee. But how many of you are parents or guardians of children who are in 4k-3? 3-6? And 6-9? For each time you raised a hand you could serve on either the picture book, children’s book, or junior book award committee as a parent/guardian. The Book Award Committees is a two year commitment. They meet five times a year: May, August, October, December, and March (at the Annual Conference).   A few of the duties/responsibilities for book award committee members include: maintain current membership in SCASL attend four Columbia-area meetings each year. attend the SCASL conference, be present at the appropriate booktalk sessions, and work in the Book Award section of the conference store. submit twelve book titles for the next year’s consideration list read the books on the list of books under consideration (between 100 – 250 titles depending upon the committee you serve) to narrow the list down to the top 20 best titles. assist in the creation of an online activity guide and multimedia presentation for your committee's nominees. present a booktalk for at least one book at the annual SCASL conference. As a teacher/parent member, we understand attending conference cannot always be arranged. Allowances are made; however, we are thrilled when you are able to participate in person. Does anyone have any questions for anything I’ve presented so far? I’ll let you ponder if you’d be interested in serving on a committee (btw, next year’s application opens in January), I’ll turn the session over to Alison who will introduce you to this year’s YABA nominees!
