PGR Research Training and Development Dr. Emily Bannister PGR Development Officer

Myth-busting! Not every PGR wants to be an academic 80% of Humanities PGRs secure a job outside of academia! Competition is increasingly fierce ‘Survival jobs’ vs. ‘career jobs’ The market has changed dramatically over the last 12 months

5 Key Aspects of Professional Activity Networking Teaching Researching Writing Managing Blaxter, Hughes & Tight (1998, 22)

Faculty Training PGRs need different levels of support Training may be useful for some students even if it wasn’t useful to you! Faculty training – turning students into professional researchers Training useful for ANY career – academic or otherwise

Career Progression PGRs should take advantage of less partial resources for career development An ideal opportunity to talk to other researchers Promotes interdisciplinarity and creativity PhD as a process NOT a product

PhD and beyond… 2009 PhD Transitions programme Developing administrative competencies Collaboration Public engagement activities GRAD School Other opportunities for development

Supervisory support Agree a training plan early on PGRs to fulfil their own training needs A coherent and logical training plan PGRs to only attend sessions which are suited to their ability AND level Encouragement to explore further opportunities

Any questions?
