Structuring a Presentation “Tell'em what you're gonna tell'em. Tell'em. Then tell'em what you told'em." (George Bernard Shaw)

Preparation: Structure Beginning – Introduction – Aims and Objectives/Overview – Background (if necessary) Middle – Present material in sections – Summarise at end of each section End – Summarise main points/themes – Draw main conclusions and way forward – Leave time for questions if appropriate

Presentation: Catching the audience attention. Appearance – Dress – Non-verbals Attention grabbing opening – Greeting – A quote – A visual aid Paralinguistics – tone of voice, pace, loudness

Presentation: Keeping the audience attention Build rapport with audience – Competence – Eye contact – Enthusiasm – Confidence – Involve them! Avoid monotones and jargon Use appropriate humour (caution) Open facial expressions
