Examples of Conflict Brainstorm types of intrapersonal conflict… …”I want to go out with my boyfriend/girlfriend, but I haven’t seen my best friend in a week…” Brainstorm types of interpersonal conflict… …”You stole my shirt, I want it back…” Brainstorm types of intragroup conflict… Someone on the football team punched another player on the same team Brainstorm types of intergroup conflict… The baseball team and the lacrosse team get into a fight.

Conflict Response Style The pattern of behavior a person uses in a conflict situation Conflict Avoidance – a person chooses to avoid disagreements. You avoid telling others that you disagree with them Rather than disagree you sit back and allow others to solve problems

Conflict Response Style Conflict Confrontation – a person attempts to settle a conflict in a hostile, defiant and aggressive way. This person wants to win or be right Believes only his/her side is worth considering Conflict Resolution – a person uses conflict resolution skills to resolve a problem

Conflict Resolution Skills Conflict Resolution Skills – steps that can be taken to settle a disagreement in a responsible way These steps help you to : Remain Rational Remain in control Listen to the other person’s side Figure out a win-win solution

Conflict Resolution Skills 1. Remain Calm 2. Set a positive tone 3. Define the conflict 4. Take responsibility for personal actions 5. Listen to the needs/feelings of others 6. List and evaluate the possible solutions 7. Agree on a solution

Conflict Resolution Skills Remain Calm Try to increase your patience and lower your personal “boiling point.” Set a positive tone Demonstrate that you want to be fair and find a mutually acceptable solution. Define the conflict Write it down – keep the focus on the conflict not the people involved

Conflict Resolution Skills Take responsibility for personal actions Admit what part you have played Listen to the needs/feelings of others Use I-messages List and evaluate possible solutions Discuss positive and negative consequences of each possible solution Agree on a solution

Conflict Resolution vs Mediation When people are unable to resolve conflicts on their own a mediator is needed. Mediation – a process in which an outside person (mediator), helps people resolve conflict.

What to know about Mediation Agree on a Mediator Set ground rules Define the conflict Identify solutions to the conflict Evaluate suggested solutions Negotiate a solution Agree on a solution Schedule a follow-up meeting
