2 Passive When someone holds back their ideas, feelings, and decisions
People with passive behavior typically lack self-confidence, make excuses, and avoid sharing feelings and/or making decisions

3 Aggressive When someone uses words or actions that are disrespectful towards others People with aggressive behavior might interrupt others or dominate a conversation They might call others names and/or make sarcastic remarks They typically threaten others because they lack self-confidence

4 Assertive When someone honestly and respectfully expresses their ideas, feelings, and decisions without worrying about what others think People with assertive behavior are self-confident and show others that they are in control of themselves

6 When a person fails to make choices
Inactive When a person fails to make choices HABITS… Postpone something until a future time PROCRASTINATE Take little control of the direction of their lives Have difficulty gaining self-confidence

7 When a person allows others to make his/her decisions
Reactive When a person allows others to make his/her decisions HABITS… Easily influenced by what others think They give control of the direction of their lives to others They lack self-confidence and have a great need to be liked by others

8 Proactive When a person makes a decision using the “Responsible Decision-Making Model” HABITS… Not easily influenced by peers Has control over his/her own life They have principles which help guide their decisions

9 Responsible Decision-Making Model
Describe the situation that requires a decision List the possible decisions you can make Share the list with a trusted adult Evaluate the consequences of each possible decision Is it healthy? Is it safe? Does it show respect for self and others? Does it follow guidelines of parents and authority? Does it demonstrate good character? Choose the decision that is most responsible and appropriate Act on your decision and evaluate the results

10 Conflict Response Styles and Conflict-Resolution Skills

11 Avoidance When someone chooses to avoid, or back away from disagreements Even if they disagree with a person they are unwilling to challenge him/her This is an example of passive behavior

12 Confrontation When a person attempts to settle a disagreement in a hostile, disrespectful manner They want to win or be right They view a conflict as “win-lose” They believe that their side is the only one worth considering This is an example of aggressive behavior

13 Resolution When a person uses “conflict-resolution” skills to resolve a problem They remain rational and in control They listen to the other person’s side They see the potential for a “win-win” solution or compromise This is an example of assertive behavior

14 How to Use Conflict-Resolution Skills
Remain Calm Set a Positive Tone (avoid placing blame, put-downs, and threats) Define and then Describe the Conflict Take Responsibility for Personal Actions Listen to the Needs and Feelings of Others List and Evaluate Possible Solutions Agree on a Solution
