Multiple Intelligence

Essential Question: What is the multiple intelligence theory? Do you think you have more than one intelligence?

THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University, studied the brain for over 20 years. In 1983 he developed a theory of Multiple Intelligences. He believes that intelligence is a biophysical potential that reaches achievement due to cultural and motivational influences. Did you say - Huh?

When cultures value certain competencies, the children in that society are given an opportunity to develop those competencies and abilities. Our society generally VALUES mathematical and science related skills. Intelligence is multifaceted, otherwise high achievers would perform at high levels all across the board. Multiple Intelligences is indicated when the same person can find advance subject matter easy in one area and difficult in another – We all have all 8, but are stronger in some than others.

There are currently eight basic Intelligences Visual-Spatial (picture smart) Bodily-Kinesthetic (Body smart) Verbal-Linguistic (word smart) Naturalist (nature smart) Musical-Rhythmic (music smart) Logical-Mathematical (number/reasoning smart) Intrapersonal (self smart) Interpersonal (people smart) Existential (spiritually smart) #9

What are your “intelligences?” Using a student laptop, DO THE FOLLOWING: 1.Go to the following website: (copy & paste the link) tiple_int/what.cfm Take the multiple intelligence test Which intelligence are you? Record this on your Multiple Intelligence Tally Sheet. PLACE FOR THIS AT THE TOP! PLACE A TALLY MARK IN THE APPROPRIATE COLUMN FOR YOUR INTELLIGENCE ON THE SMARTBOARD TO ADD TO THE CLASS CHART 2. Go to the following website: (copy & paste the link) Do at least 1 activity from each intelligence On you Multiple Intelligence Tally Sheet record which activity you did and YES or NO
