2 Multiple Intelligences Theory
In the past, people have defined someone who is intelligent as an individual who can solve problems, use logic to answer questions, and think critically. The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes nine different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. 9 ways to be smart…

5 Intrapersonal Intelligence
The ability to know and understand one’s self, including goals, tendencies, feelings, talents, limitations. Typically need time alone to reflect or work. SELF SMART Master: Mother Teresa

6 Interpersonal Intelligence
The ability to notice and make distinctions among other individuals; a strong understanding of other people. Typically enjoy working in a group of people, favor social pastimes, and like to take on leadership roles. PEOPLE SMART Master: Barack Obama

7 Linguistic Intelligence
The ability to use language to express one’s thoughts and to understand other people orally or in writing; avid readers and/or writers. WORD SMART Master: Mark Twain

The ability to hear music in one’s head, and to hear tones, rhythms, and larger musical patterns; might hum while working. MUSIC SMART Master: Mozart

9 Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
The ability to manipulate numbers, quantities, and operations accompanied by a love of dealing with abstraction. Enjoy solving problems, fixing things or conducting experiments. NUMBER SMART Master: Albert Einstein

10 Visual-Spatial Intelligence
The ability to represent the spatial world visually in one’s mind. Often see pictures in their mind and love to draw, paint, sketch, or sculpt. ART SMART Master: Claude Monet

11 Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
The ability to use the whole body or parts of the body to solve a problem or create a product. Often think best while moving, use gestures when speaking and learn by doing. BODY SMART Master: Peyton Manning

12 Naturalist Intelligence
The ability to discriminate among living things and to see patterns; also, a sensitivity to features of the natural world. Enjoy the outdoors. NATURE SMART Master: Charles Darwin

13 Spiritual/Existential Intelligence
The ability to see the “big picture” and ask important questions. Enjoy thinking and are curious about life. WONDERING SMART Master: Joseph Campbell

14 Which Intelligence is YOUR Strength?
Everyone has ALL the intelligences, just in different degrees. You can strengthen an intelligence! MI is meant to empower, not label. No one strength is better then another. It is simply, and wonderfully: you! Let’s see where your strengths are…
