Muscular and Skeletal Systems

Muscle & Skeletons…oh why? 3. Movement Away from danger Toward food/water Toward a mate 1. Structure & Support of the body. 2. Protection of organs.

Types of Skeletons Exoskeleton: a hard (usually chitin based) support system on the outside of the body. Endoskeleton: a calcium based support system on the inside of the body.

Our Endoskeleton does some amazing things… We already know about: But it also: Support & protection Provides a site for muscles to anchor. Produces red and white blood cells in the..? Movement

Ball & Socket Joint (hip & shoulder) Skeletal Joint Types Hinge Joint (knee & elbow) Gliding Joint (wrist & ankle) Ball & Socket Joint (hip & shoulder) Fixed Joint (skull) Pivot Joint (neck)

(Remember: T for TWO types of tissue) Other Fun Parts… Remember: L for LONE (one lone type of tissue) (Remember: T for TWO types of tissue) Ligaments connect bone to bone Tendons connect muscle to bone Cartilage: A tough, flexible fiber that cushions between bones and provides some shape to our bodies.

Muscle Types 1. Skeletal Muscle allows for the movement of bones 3. Cardiac Muscle makes up the heart (and only the heart!) 2. Smooth Muscle makes up most of our internal organs (ex: stomach, intestines)

It takes TWO muscles to move a bone. Movement of Bones WRITE THIS DOWN AND KNOW THIS!!! It takes TWO muscles to move a bone. Write this at home 10,000 times. 1. It takes TWO muscles to move a bone. 2. Muscles can ONLY PULL a bone. They can NOT push!! 3. Flexors decrease the angle of a joint, while Extensors increase the angle of a joint.

The Mystery of the Human Skeleton

The Best Students Ever Using Their Muscles!

Which is your FLEXOR? Which is your EXTENSOR? Quiz A B Which is your FLEXOR? Which is your EXTENSOR?

Disorders OUCH!!!

A normal joint with a cartilage “cushion” in between the bones. Arthritis Pain, stiffness, inflammation and deformity in joints primarily due to a loss of cartilage. An arthritic joint where bone is grinding and scraping on adjoining bone. A normal joint with a cartilage “cushion” in between the bones.

OUCH!!

An actual tendon.. supposedly with tendonitis. Swelling and irritation of a tendon, usually near the site the muscle attaches to the bone. An irritated tendon An actual tendon.. supposedly with tendonitis.

Broken Growth Plate A growth plate is a region near the end of long bones where they grow in diameter and length. A broken growth plate in child is monitored very closely to ensure proper growth after the break.

Know your bones!!

How do the Skeletal and Muscular Systems relate to THREE other body systems?
