ADDING FRACTIONS WITH UNLIKE DENOMINATORS

GOAL:  I can add fractions with sums greater than one.

AGENDA  Fluency  Application Problem  Learn Zillion Video  Whole group instruction  Go Cart Task  Exit Ticket

FLUENCY  You will have 5 minutes to complete as many problems as you can.  You will be adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.  Whoever completes the most correctly will get a treat! DO YOUR BEST

APPLICATION PROBLEM  To make punch for the class party, Ms. Danson mixed 1 1/3 cups orange juice, ¾ cup apple juice, 2/3 cup cranberry juice, and ¾ cup lemon-lime soda. Mixed together, how many cups of punch does the recipe make?  Extension: Each student drinks 1 cup. How many recipes does Ms. Danson need to serve her 20 students?

LEARN ZILLION  denominators-using-fraction-bars denominators-using-fraction-bars

NOW, LET’S DO THIS TOGETHER  2 4/5 + 1 ½

GO CART TASK  You will have about 10 minutes for private think time. I want you to work through this independently. What is the problem asking you to do? How do you know? Show me your evidence!  Then, you will have about 10 minutes for small group time- talk to your partner about your solution path. Is it different from theirs? If so, how? If it is the same, you need to be able to tell me how!  Whole group- We’ll spend about 10 minutes discussing this task and what different way we can get the same answer.

EXIT TICKET  There are only 2 problems on your exit ticket, so this should not take you longer than 6 minutes!  You may use any strategy you want. Just make sure it is the write answer.  If you get finished before the 6 minutes, check your work.

EXIT TICKET  3 ½ + 1 1/3 =  4 5/ /4 =

A STAR…A WISH Star  Tell me something you learned knew today that you feel really confident about. Wish  Tell me something that you would like more help on. Be very specific with your writing!

GOAL  Someone tell me in their own words what our goal was.  How might this benefit us in our daily lives?
