1 5th Grade Module 3 – Lesson 3
Lesson 3: I can add fractions with unlike units using the strategy of creating equivalent fractions. 5th Grade Module 3 – Lesson 3

2 Time to Sprint! Your teacher will give you the sprint.

3 Adding Like Fractions Let’s add fractions mentally. Say answers as whole numbers when possible. 3 5 = = 2 3 5 or 1 Two fourths! One third plus one third equals? = Two thirds! One fourth plus one fourth equals? 5th Grade Module 3 – Lesson 3

4 Fractions as Division When I show a fraction, you write it as a division statement. 9 5 5 8 = 5 ÷ 8 9 5 = 9 ÷ 5 = 3 ÷ 10 = 13 ÷ 6 13 6 5 8 3 10 7 4 3 4 = 3 ÷ 4 3 4 5 2 5 2 = 5 ÷ 2 1 3 = 1 ÷ 3 1 3 7 4 = 7 ÷ 4 5th Grade Module 3 – Lesson 3

7 2,000 ÷ 5 = 400 mL Application Problem
*Bonus: How many milliliters are in each glass? 2,000 mL 2,000 ÷ 5 = 400 mL 5th Grade Module 3 – Lesson 3

8 4 fifths! 4 adults! 1 fifth plus 3 fifths? Concept Development
What is 1 child plus 3 adults? 1 child + 3 adults = Why can’t we add this? 1 child + 3 adults? They aren’t the same unit! Can we change the unit? 1 person + 3 people = 4 people! We can add 1 fifth and 3 fifths because the units are the same. 4 fifths! Let’s think back to what we learned about adding in third grade… What is 1 adult plus 3 adults? 4 adults! 1 fifth plus 3 fifths? 5th Grade Module 3 – Lesson 3

9 1 2 + 1 4 We need to make like units before we add!
