Subtracting with unlike denominators 11-6-14

GOAL  I can subtract fractions with unlike denominators by using the strategy of creating equivalent fractions.

Equivalent Fractions  2/3  4/5  3/7

Adding with unlike denominators  1/5 + 2/3  ¾ + 3/7  2/8 + 1/2

Subtracting fractions with unlike denominators What predictions can you make about subtracting fractions with unlike denominators? Will we use the same strategy that we used for adding fractions with unlike denominators?

Subtracting Fractions 1/3 – ¼= 5/6- ¼=

You try it!  ½ - 1/3  Use private think time to work on this problem. Small group-Talk to your partner about your solution path. Is it the same? Different? How?

Amanda’s Backpack Task Amanda’s backpack weighs 10 pounds. Her books weigh 6 6/8 pounds. Her lunch weighs 1 3/4 pounds. If the only other thing in her backpack is her notebook, how much does it weight? Use equations, diagrams, and words to explain your thinking. If you finish early… The next day, Amanda’s backpack still weighs 10 pounds. It contains books, her lunch, and her notebook. Create at least two equations that show how much each of these items could weigh.

GOAL  What did we learn how to do today?  How could we use this in our daily lives?

A star….. A wish….  Star- what is something that you learned today that you did not know before?  Wish- What is something you would like more help with that we learned today?

Exit Ticket ½- 1/7 = 3/5- ½=
