3 rd Grade Parent Meeting Union Cross Elementary October 05, 2010

Welcome Parents! Items to discuss this evening: Independence and Responsibility Grading and weight of grades Fluency Math Facts Quarter Testing Homework AR and Reading Homework Parent Assist

Independence and Responsibility Independence and taking responsibility are HUGE skills in 3 rd grade. Encourage independence at home as we do at school.

Grading and weight of grades A = B = C = D = F = 69 & below Grades Are Weighted! 15% Classwork 15% Participation 30% Quizzes 40% Tests / Projects

Fluency Reading follows 3 stages Phonics, then fluency, then comprehension Fluency means reading at the pace at which you normally speak. (Using expression) 3 rd graders were screened for fluency Currently teachers are working with students who are not fluent to increase fluency rates. Reading at home is the best way to help!

Math Facts STUDY THEM! Multiplication will be started in early November. Make Flash Cards or purchase flash cards. Please continue to review addition and subtraction. This is a 2 nd grade skill that should be mastered by now.

Quarter Testing 1 st quarter testing dates are October 25, 26 and 27. We treat these as “mock EOG’s” It is imperative that students be here for testing! Scores will be sent home once we receive them. 70% and above is considered proficient

Homework! Homework should be primarly independent! They should NOT require help from you often. Homework must be done daily. It is an extended practice of the day’s work. The students are RESPONSIBLE for completing and returning their homework to school. This is not the parent’s responsibility.

AR and Reading Homework Each child has an AR goal to complete by the end of each quarter. The percentage of correct questions must be 80% for first quarter and 85% after that. Each child has been given their AR “color”. They should be reading in their color! Research shows that student’s who read 30 minutes per day increase their EOG score by 30%.

Parent Assist Parents can now have access to grades as soon as they are posted. Progress reports will not be sent home any longer. If you don’t have your access information, you must see the office. Teachers do not have your access codes Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

Questions? What questions can we answer for you?

THANK YOU! Thank you for coming! The PowerPoint will be available on the school’s website!
