1 Curriculum Night

2 Our Class The mission of Mrs. Kubera’s Third Grade class is to prepare for 4th Grade. We will try our best to learn and have fun while treating others the way we want to be treated.

3 Our Curriculum – The Common Core
The Common Core was developed by a consortium that created a universally and developmentally appropriate curriculum. This allows for students in any grade to learn the same thing at approximately the same time, reducing gaps as students relocate. It has also adopted the College & Career Readiness Anchor Standards.

4 8 Mathematical Practices
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

5 Moby Max Students have taken a pretest.
Weaknesses identified by the program as aligned with the Common Core standards. Tutorials and practice begin at the first weakness based on grade gap. User ID and password previously sent home and in student planner as well. Fact practice as well – further elaboration and development of use plan under way. Beginning now is fine.

6 Reading – Digging Deeper
Focus on the types of reading done in college and in the workplace and less on fiction. Perseverance – if I don’t understand what I am reading, can I use strategies to figure it out? Greater focus on building presentation skills – listening and speaking. Analysis of word structure and vocabulary Organizing information using graphic organizers to build our own comprehension Skill examples: Main idea, cause & effect, compare and contrast, text structures, text features, etc.

7 Accelerated reader (AR)
Tested beginning of every quarter Goal set 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter with Mrs. Kubera Grade given for percentage of completion in 3rd & 4th quarters Students should stay within their reading level “Reading for meaning” Letter sent home 2 weeks ago with log on information. Tests taken Percent toward goal

8 Spelling Will begin this coming week Differentiated based on pretest
