JEHS Astronomy First day of class

What does your universe look like? On a blank sheet of paper, draw what you think the universe looks like. Include as much detail as you can. Use color and label everything You must include at least 50 unique items Collaborate with a neighbor if you need help or would like to give help You have 20 minutes, GO.

Astronomy, Goals On a blank sheet of paper write down this question: "Why am I taking an Astronomy class this year?" Now answer that question! Please think about this seriously...

Astronomy, Goal On the same sheet of paper, write down 3 goals you would like to accomplish as an astronomy student in this class The goals should be specific and they should be measurable (it should be easy to figure out if you've accomplished the goal) The goals should not be too simple: "I want to know what a black hole is" is too simple, but "I want to be comfortable giving a presentation on specific astronomy topics to a large audience" is a really good goal. A grade average is always a good goal to set.

Astronomy, Goals Below your goals, write down all the things you think you'll need to be able to do to accomplish your three goals. Think specifically about what you will need to have accomplished by the end of this 6 weeks to be on your way to achieving your 3 goals. So finally - write down exactly what you want to have done by the end of this 6 weeks (which will be "checkpoint 1" on your way to your three goals). We will revisit these goals at the end of the 6 weeks.

Astronomy, Mission Statement Think of your answer to the very first question, and your three goals. You are now going to write a mission statement - it should only be a sentence or two long, and it should clearly state your purpose in this class this year.

Classroom Norms Come up with 5 "norms" - items the class should follow everyday. You cannot come up with a norm that is explicitly against district policy These norms must help you on your way to achieving your goals, if you know it won't help you, then throw it out Your group should write your 5 norms on one sheet of paper
