Unit 4, Lesson 12 How VoIP Communication Works AOIT Principles of Information Technology

Digital and analog signals are different Analog signals happen in nature. They move with a curvy wave (called a sine wave). Standard phones use analog technology. Digital signals are used only by computers. They move in a square wave, using only “on” or “off,” the binary “0” or “1.”

Standard phone calls use analog signals A standard phone call, for voice or modem communication, uses analog technology.

VoIP calls use digital signals and the Internet A VoIP phone call uses the Internet’s digital technology.
