The Sensational 60’s The Decade of Change

The Nixon Kennedy Debates Olympic Games in Rome Fashions 1960

1961 “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Vietnam The war created terrible conflict both at home and abroad. The country was divided, a division that would continue for decades.

1962 John Glenn became the first man to orbit the earth. Jackie Robinson became the first black American to play major league baseball. Bobby Vinto toped the charts with Roses are Red

1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. moves the world with his “I have a dream” speech. Camelot ends with the assassination of JFK.

1964 Ladies and Gentleman, It’s The Beatles. The first Civil Rights bill was passed to stop discrimination. Cigarette boxes printed the warning, “Smoking can be hazardous to your health.”

1965 President Johnson ordered bombing raids on North Vietnam. Americans begin protesting the War. The Astrodome, the world’s first roof stadium is built.

1966 The Legendary Walt Disney Dies. Long Hair is in! Psychedelic clothing hits the streets!

1967 Dr. Christiaan Barnard performs the first heart transplant. Bonnie and Clyde was a box office hit! To Sir with Love by LuLu is number one on the charts.

1968 Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Robert Kennedy is assassinated in June. Shirley Chisholm is elected as America’s first black congress women.

1969 The decade ends with the Woodstock Music festival on a farm in upstate New York. On July 20 th, 1969 at 4:18 p.m. Apollo 11 landed on the moon. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The 60’s It was a time of triumph and tragedy, a time of war and a longing for peace. It was a time of hope and despair. It defined a generation and would forever change the world. It was the 60’s!
