2 John F. Kennedy 35th President in 1961 a Famous Quote JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. Kennedy increased the size of the South Vietnamese Army from 15,000 to 17,000 and extra 1000 US military advisors to help train the South Vietnamese Army. Kennedy was an equal rights president he wanted equal rights for African Americans just like the Whites had (Civil Rights Activist). John F Kennedy didn’t do much as a president because he was only a president for 3 years. He was assassinated on November 22, 1963 May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963 Presidential Term January 20, November 22, 1963

3 Martin Luther King Jr. In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. King traveled millions of miles and spoke over – twenty – five hundred times. His best speech was “ I Have A Dream” this speech was made on August 28, 1963 delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters in Washington D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial. He was a very strong worker for the Civil Rights too happen. King never gave up on his Dream even though he wasn’t there to see that he made a big differences in American History his Dream came true. African American had equal rights and will take like that forever. January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968

Sold billions of records. They were also one of the most popular bands in the 1960’s. Jimi Hendrix: Rock n Roll Musician, Singer, Song writer. One of the greatest guitarists in the 1960’s. Sold millions of records. The Animals: British Band popular band in the 1960’s. They played Blues, Hard Rock, Blue Rock sold millions of records.

6 Speeches/Quotes President John F Kennedy gave that speech for future American soldiers/ American soldiers that were going too the Vietnam War. This speech many men want to fight for there Families, Friends, and beloved Country. Martin Luther King Jr. quote become one of the best quotes for the Civil Right to happen. This quote gave African Americans hope that one day they will have equal rights very soon in the 1960’s. “I Have A Dream” was given by Martin Luther King Jr. in which he called for an end to racism in the United States. Many civil rights supporters were inspired by this speech gave them hope for a new change of themselves. “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country” . -President John F Kennedy 1960’s “Love is the only force capable of turning an enemy into a friend”.  -Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have A Dream”

7 Trends and Fads Culture and society also became more casual. Many more outfits began to feature slimmer and sleeker lines with A-line and shift dresses being amongst the most popular fashions for women and tapered dress shirts being popular with men. Hemlines of skirts rose higher for women, hair length grew longer on men, and two piece bikinis became common swimming attire.

8 Sports From the 1960’s through 1969 the most fashionable sports were: Football, tennis and volleyball. Young people practiced sports mainly at school, like volleyball, football, swimming and soccer just once a week. During the 1960s there were not as many sports in the Olympic games as now. Only participated the categories in football, running, handball, basketball.

9 Inventions Valium was invented by Leo Sternbach in 1963 and rapidly became the most commonly sold pill in the world. The Phillips Co. of the Netherlands invented the first compact audio cassette on March 5, ( 1.7 inches per second and a playback speed of 8 inches per second ). Douglas Engelbart of Stanford Research Center invented the computer mouse in 1963.
