Climate Change and The Military Project Project IES - Climate Change & Security at Copenhagen - II The Contribution of the Global Security Community to Success Brussels, 7 -8 October 2009

The Climate Change Matrix  Arctic ice melt, Glacier melt: Repercussions  Climate Change and Global Challenge  Debate on securitisation of climate.  Role of Military Institutions  Both in adaptation and mitigation  New roles: Safeguarding human security jeopardised due to climate change  Understand the new variable of climate change in international security dynamics  Fourth IPCC report categorical in pinpointing loss of natural resources due to Climate Change. Stress Points.  Land  Water  Food

The Climate Change Matrix  Climate Change and Security: Interrelation  Distribution of dwindling natural resources are points of stress concentration especially when vulnerable strata of society involved.  Indian perspective  Economically weak and badly affected neighbours.  Sea level rise would cause internal and international migration at zones where such pattern already exists.  Agriculture likely to be very badly affected: Weather related hunger likely to engulf billions.  Climate Change and Indian Military. Briefly the major impacts that Indian military would have to contend with are:  Logistics routes.  Relocation of coastal military assets and maritime borders  Manage depleting ODS  Enhanced health care programme  Faster melting of snow in Jammu & Kashmir  Encroachment on military land due to migration

Do not only aspire for results but act and only then there would be a result – Philosophy of ‘Karma’ TIME TO ACT IS NOW
