Japanese Art

Cultural Influences The Japanese have been influenced by many different cultures including the Chinese, Koreans and Europeans. However these influences did not last for long periods due to the fact that Japan is an Island nation.

Nature The Japanese celebrate nature and its beauty. Many of the paintings and art include simple images of plants and animals.

Art Media The main medium used by most Japanese artist is watercolor. They use brushes made from bamboo and animal hair. A common theme in the art is water because Japan is an island nation.

Printmaking Japanese artists also created art using Printmaking. An artist carves an image into a piece of wood, applies ink and prints it onto paper. This was introduced by the Europeans.

Calligraphy The art of writing is also important in the Japanese culture. This was influenced by the Chinese.
