English for Specific Purposes in UMM By : Masduki Lailatul Rifah Prima Beauty K.

Theoretical Base English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is defined to meet specific needs of the learners (Maslow, 1943) Strevens’ (1988) ESP may be, but is not necessarily: - restricted as to the language skills to be learned (e.g. reading only)… Anthony (1997) - ESP may be related to or designed for specific disciplines; - ESP is generally designed for intermediate or advanced students - Most ESP courses assume some basic knowledge of the language system, but it can be used with beginners (1998)

What we are doing about ESP in UMM English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in Language Center, University of Muhammadiyah Malang was established since 1994. Since English is now considered as “globish” (Global English), ESP in UMM is designed to equip the students with English language skills; Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. ESP is offered during two semesters: the first and second semester.

Core Competence - ESP Understanding, applying, and analyzing factual, conceptual, procedural, and meta-cognitive knowledge based on the needs of English skill mastery. Having the English command, the students are expected to do academic activities so that they are able to process and to present the development of knowledge obtained at higher education level in real and abstract domains independently

Program Duration To reach the core competencies, ESP is done in : 2 Semesters With 12 SKS

Skills offered in Semester I In semester I, ESP is divided in three subjects; ESP Listening – 2 credits ESP Reading 1 – 2 credits ESP Speaking 1 – 2 credits The total score is gained from the accumulation of the score in those three subjects. If a student gets D in one subject, the entire subjects will obviously fail.

Semester II In semester II, ESP is divided in three subjects; ESP Reading 2 – 2 credits ESP Speaking 2 – 2 credits ESP Writing – 2 credits The total score is gained from the accumulation of the score in those three subjects. If a students fails in one subject and gets D, s/he will accordingly be considered as “fail” in the entire subjects.

Assessment TAEP (Test of Academic English Proficiency) is developed to assess the students’ academic English Proficiency. TAEP has already been calibrated and gained the property right. TAEP looks like TOEFL; It consists of three sections, namely Listening, Structure, and Reading Comprehension sections.

Why TAEP? English is “Globish” (Global English). It is spoken by different people all over the globe. English is no more American nor British style. A good English is no more native-speaker English, but comprehensible English It is necessary to develop a test in which the English of non-native speaker is present in addition to the native speakers’

TAEP CERTIFICATE for ESP Graduates
