Elements of Photography Now that you’ve researched and found examples for the Elements and Principles of Design - consider a few of the basic elements of photography that you can use as a beginning photographer to add impact to any photograph. Color, Line, Pattern, Shadow Learning Target – I can use a camera and take photographs to illustrate the Elements & Principles of Design.

Color

Color Color can be added after you take the photograph or you can look for colorful subjects like flowers or people wearing colorful clothes. Sunsets and sunrises also make good photographs to show off color.

Line

Line Lines can be found in many places. The best examples of lines for photographing are in architecture like this fence or the lines on buildings. Lines are sometimes found in nature when plants grow in a pattern.

Pattern

Pattern Repeating patterns can be found when things are placed on top of each other or next to each other. Different colors add to the interest, but aren’t necessary.

Shadow

Shadow Shadows are best created when you have a sunny day so that you can find subjects that can cast interesting shadows on the ground or on a colorful background. You can also use a light to shine behind your subject and cast a shadow.

Digital Photography Assignment Check out a camera and take photographs to illustrate these elements of photography: Color, Line, Pattern, Shadow Download your digital files onto your computer, open a new Adobe InDesign document and place your best example of each element on a page. Each page should include your photo, a headline (Color, Line, Pattern, or Shadow), an explanation of why the photograph shows the element and/or why you chose it, and your byline (Photo by Your Name). Part 2 – take a photograph to illustrate each Element and Principle of Design and add it to your vocabulary assignment sheet. This will be included in your Final Portfolio.

Basic Elements Rubric Exceeding – Student has created an Adobe InDesign document which includes Color, Line, Pattern, Shadow. Each element has a title, an explanation using proper grammar, spelling, & punctuation, and a byline, as well as the photograph. Meeting – Student has created an Adobe InDesign document which includes all 4 of the Color, Line, Pattern, Shadow photographs. Each element has a title, and an explanation but has grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation mistakes or is missing a byline, titles or has incomplete explanations. Approaching – Student took photographs, but is missing 1 or 2. Pages document was created, but is missing titles and/or byline. Explanations are created, but not finished. Beginning – Student has started the assignment, but has not completed photographing or the Pages document. Missing many parts of assignment. No Evidence – No photographs and student has made no attempt to understand the basic elements or created document.
