Presentation transcript:

There are different types of pressure groups. Lesson Starter There are different types of pressure groups. Explain, in your own words, the different types of Pressure Groups in the UK.

Today we will… Identify how pressure groups get support and publicise their cause.

Success Criteria I can list and give examples of the different methods pressure groups use. I can define the meaning of direct action and give relevant examples.

How do pressure groups get support & publicise their cause or interest? We know that pressure groups aim to influence change in connection with their cause or interest. They do this through raising the profile of their group and what it stands for. HOW?

Pressure Group Methods Copy the diagram below Petitions Direct action Demonstrations, protests & rallies (publicity stunts) Pressure Group Methods Advertising - Posters, Leaflets Lobbying decision makers (meeting and persuading) Websites – Twitter, Facebook Insider status for some groups

Task In your groups, use the information sheets to discuss examples of Pressure group methods. Then add detail on to your diagram. You will be asked questions on these– so make sure you understand the example! Use pressure group resource sheet

Thinking Task: What did I learn? Lower order thinking What are the methods used by Pressure Groups? Why would pressure groups want to use these methods? Can you predict any problems with these methods? Higher order thinking

Direct Action UK Uncut is a movement taking action to highlight alternatives to the government's spending cuts. They think big companies should pay their taxes as many are not registered in Britain and as a result avoid paying UK tax.

Watch a video clip about UK Uncut This is an example of Direct Action and demonstrating

Watch this video clip of protesters at Faslane Watch this video clip of protesters at Faslane. Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament were present at the demonstrations.

Was I successful? I can list and give examples of the different methods pressure groups use. I can define the meaning of direct action and give relevant examples.
