1 Political Rights and Responsibilities

2 Potential Exam Question
Describe, in detail, the political rights and responsibilities of Scottish Citizens

3 What to include in this answer
This is a ‘catch all’ question and would be a really good question for you to get in the exam In it, you can draw on all that you have learned about people’s democratic rights in Scotland You also need to discuss their responsibilities. This means you not only need to say what people are entitled to do, but also what they would be expected to do

4 Rights Working with a partner, write down what responsibility goes with the rights below Right to vote Right to join a pressure group Right to stand as a candidate Right to demonstrate/protest

5 Responsibilities Here are some suggestions of responsibilities you could have mentioned: To register to vote, to find out about the candidates running, to use your vote To support the group’s campaigns by signing petitions, attending demonstrations etc To campaign within the law, uphold your promises if elected Keep the protest within the law

6 Examples Referendum on independence – Watch television shows, read newspaper articles etc to become familiar with the arguments Equality Network Scotland - Petitions, demonstrations to support same sex marriages – never broke the law during their protests Lib Dem MPs who voted for an increase in tuition fees for English students – this broke a promise they made
