Growing an avocado seed in water Written by Conor Rhatigan,Padraig Ward and Paul O’Donnell Photographs taken by Paul O’Donnell

Growing an avocado seed in water. We suspended the seed of an avocado in a jar of water using 2 paper clips. After a few days the outer brown skin disintegrated. Then a small root appeared.

At 3 weeks After 3 weeks the root was about 3cm long.

At 4 weeks After 4 weeks the root was 7 cm long. We topped up the water regularly.

At 6 weeks After 6 weeks the root had reached the bottom of the jar and a green shoot had appeared.

At 7 weeks After 7 weeks the jar was too small and the root began to turn upwards. At this point we decided to place it in a pot.

At 10 weeks After 10 weeks we had a plant 30cm high.
