16 Notebook Set-Up Cont. Virtual Seed Lab: Experimental Design
Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, write the title and date again. In the bottom right hand corner write “9”. Below the Title, drop down a few spaces and write the Header, “Experimental Design” See next slide to set this page.

17 Add more pages to this experiment:
(left side) (right side) Date VIRTUAL LAB SEED EXPERIMENT 9. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Research Question: Null (Ho) Hypothesis: Alternative (Ha) hypothesis: we will add later during class Independent Variable: Experimental Group(s): will fill in while completing experiment in Part 2 of summer assignment Control: Seeds Soaked Overnight (10 hrs light and 14 hrs Dark at 23oC) Dependent Variable: Constants: we will add later during class

18 Filling out the Experimental Design:
Research Question: What do seedlings need to germinate? Hypothesis Null: The Independent Variable (IV) will not effect the Dependent Variable (DV). What is your Independent Variable (IV) for the Virtual Seed Lab? This is going to vary and be based on your last name. See next slide. What is the Dependent Variable (DV)? Measurement of root and shoot length (cm)

19 Filling out the Experimental Design:
What is your Independent Variable (IV) for the Virtual Seed Lab? This is going to be based on your last name. Instructions for these will come in next slides. Last Name Independent Variable Control vs Experiment Group A-E Time (exposed to light) A1 10 hrs light, 14 hrs dark vs. B1 24 hrs dark F-K A1 10 hrs light, 14 hrs dark vs. C1 24 hrs light L-O Type of Light A1 10 hrs light, 14 hrs dark vs. D1 Daylight P-T Rotation of seeds A1 soaked, not rotated vs. A2 soaked & rotated U-Z Presence of water A1 soaked vs. A3 not soaked

20 Notebook Set-Up Cont. Virtual Seed Lab: Materials & Procedures
Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, write the title and date again. In the bottom right hand corner write “10”. Below the Title, drop down a few spaces and write the Header, “Materials”. Leave 10 lines and write the Header “Procedures”. MATERIALS SHOULD BE BULLETED PROCEDURES SHOULD BE NUMBERED See next slide for this page.

21 Add more pages to this experiment:

22 List of Materials to write into Notebook:
Seed packets (this experiment uses Peas, Little Marvel) Re-sealable plastic bags (sandwich or quart size) Paper towels or napkins Water Tape Cardboard (optional) Paper clips (optional) Binder clips (optional) Scissors

23 Procedures to Write into Notebook:
Day 1, soak the seeds (this experiment uses Peas, Little Marvel) overnight in water. Day 2, Place a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag and place 5-10 seeds on the paper towel in the bag. Blow air into the bag and seal. On Day 3-4, observe the growth of the seeds.

24 Notebook Set-Up Cont. Virtual Seed Lab: Data Tables
Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, write the title and date again. In the bottom right hand corner write “11”. Below the Title, drop down a few spaces and write the Header, “Data Table”. See next slide for this page.

25 Add more pages to this experiment:
(left side) (right side) Date VIRTUAL LAB SEED EXPERIMENT 11. DATA TABLES: be sure to include a Title for the tables Titles are always “Table 1 (or 2 if you have multiple tables): The effect of IV on DV”

26 Notebook Set-Up Cont. Virtual Seed Lab: Graphs
Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, write the title and date again. In the bottom right hand corner write “12”. Below the Title, drop down a few spaces and write the Header, “Graph”. See next slide for this page.

Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, write the title and date again. In the bottom right hand corner write “13”. Below the Title, drop down a few spaces and write the Header, “Results”. See next slides for guidance on this page.

29 Analysis of Data/Results
Making a Claim from the Data for the Control seeds and the experimental seeds on days 1-10: Look at your graphs. Do you notice any trends in the data? Which days do the seeds start to grow a root, or a shoot? Do roots and shoots grow at the same rate? Does the data help us to answer our research questions: How do seedlings develop over time? See next slide for further guidance on how to compose your results paragraph.

30 Add more pages to this experiment:
(left side) (right side) Date VIRTUAL LAB SEED EXPERIMENT 13. Results: (in paragraph form) State your Research Question. Claim: Make a claim - (statement that answers the research question) Evidence: Provide evidence from the data that was collected Reasoning - describe how the science principles explain the results

31 *** be sure to go back and fill in the information on your Table of Contents!!!*** Move on to Part 2: Collect your Data All Done with Part 1!!! This direction sheet can be found in the Summer Assignment Packet
