The traditional floats The lantern

When the cool winds blow through the hills and the forests, and the fields of rice-heavy with grain-catch the golden rays of the evening sun, it’s tine for the eagerly awaited harvest. This is follow by the Yi- peng festival.

Chaing Mai is well know for its important festivals- the summer and the winter festivals-the former is undoubtedly Songkarn Thailands traditional new year, while the latter is often thought to be the annual winter fair with the beauty contest. In fact it is the Yi-Peng Festival, better know as Loy Krathong.

On Yi-Peng night the full moon sends a cool rich light across the night skies. Local people prepare to float their lanterns and krathong on the sacred Ping River.

The Yi Peng festival of Chaing mai is derived from the Bra him belief of floating away evil, or in worships of the god Shiva who resides mid-ocean. Another way of thinking is derived from the lord of Buddha left his footprints on the banks of the full moon

In twelfth month. It, therefore, become the tradition to float lanterns is worship of rural Thailand also maintain that the festival is held to show penitence of the river Goddess. The lives of these villagers are dependent on the river; and also disposing of refuse.

Therefore, washing making a living, and also disposing of refuse. Therefore, they make an annual respect and gratitude to the river by floating a krathing containing light candles, incense and a prayer onto the water.

For this festival, the people of Chaing Mai also float the lanterns into the sky. This is believed to have derived from Burma when Chaing Mai was still a vassal state of the Burmese Kingdom. This is a specialized art, unique to the north.

The lanterns are made of Sa paper or colorful cellophane, glued onto a bamboo frame in a rectangular or cylinder shape as so desired.
