Review True or False? Portion sizes have changed over the past 20 years. Why did Morgan Spurlock start sweating when he was eating his “Super Sized Meal”?

Food and Advertising Watch the following clips from the DVD “Super size Me” and answer the questions. Go to “Lessons” Click on 6 th -8 th grade Click on Literacy and Interdisciplinary lessons. Choose lesson #8- “Ads are kid sized too”.

Food and Advertising Ad Techniques Testimonial- Using someone famous. Sense Appeal- pictures or sounds used to appeal to your senses. Transfer- Using someone popular to sell the product, making you think you will be that way too if you use it. Bandwagon- ad suggests everyone is using the product and so should you or you will be left out.

Ad Techniques Continued Plainfolks- Using an average down to earth person so the average consumer will identify with the product. Humor- People remember funny commercials. Helps associate a positive feeling with the product. Statistics- People are impressed by stats and numbers. Some ads leave out certain stats on purpose. Cardstacking- Ad concentrates only on the good of the product, no down side. Public Good- Ad associates their product with a good feeling for the environment, recycling or saving animals.

Ad Techniques Continued Catch Phrases- Ads repeat a musical jingle hoping you remember it later. Snob Appeal- Says that rich people use this, and costing more means it’s better. Comparison- Compares their product with other inferior products. Symbols- Logos Having Fun- Shows people enjoying them selves.

Ads and Nutrition Using one or more ad techniques, create an ad for the cafeteria here at school. Make it bright, big enough to see or read. Spell correctly.
