UNIT 1.1 PERSONAL NARRATIVE Thursday, Aug. 22 and Friday, Aug. 23

FRIDAY, AUG. 23  Objective: I will understand the components of a personal narrative essay by annotating a good model. I will begin my personal narrative by narrowing down a topic.  Standards: Writing Applications 2.1, Writing Strategies 1.1  Journal Question: What is the story behind your name? Who gave it to you and does it carry any special meaning?

WHAT IS A PERSONAL NARRATIVE?  There are moments in our lives that changed us somehow. Moving to a new house. Seeing your brother go off to war. Listening to a record of your favorite band for the first time. Think of that one event that changed your life. You were a different person before; you were a different person after.

2 PARTS OF A PERSONAL NARRATIVE  Part 1: Event description in specific details, focusing on the senses. What happened? Who was there? What did it sound like? Where did it take place? Focus directly at the moment. Write about the exact hour or minute of the event so the reader can retrace your steps.

2 PARTS OF A PERSONAL NARRATIVE  Part 2: Explain how this event changed you. How did this teach you to be a different person? What have you learned, even ‘til this day?

ESSENTIALLY… How does this event make you the person you are today?

“MY NAME” BY SANDRA CISNEROS  As we read aloud, annotate the story using the symbols we learned last time we had class. (At least 5 annotations)  Consider the following questions: Is this a personal narrative? Why or why not? What are some things that stick out to you about it? Can you relate to the story?

UNIT 1 ASSESSMENTS INSTRUCTIONS AND RUBRICS  Use these sheets to guide you as your complete each assessment.  The rubric is what I will use to grade you. Take note of the things I’m looking for in each!  Highlight the due dates!

CHOOSING A TOPIC  Choosing a topic for your personal narrative is half the battle.  Remember, it must be about a single event that changed your life.

GOOD TOPICS? DISCUSS.  My best friend  The day my dog of 10 years died  Christmas  The moment my boyfriend broke up with me  My first day at SAE  Skydiving for the first time

PERSONAL NARRATIVE ATTRIBUTES  This sheet will guide you into writing your personal narrative essay.  We will do one as a class first.

YOUR TOPIC  Write down the topic you have chosen for your personal narrative. (If you can’t choose just yet, write down 2-3 ideas.)  Show Ms. U and receive a blank personal narrative attributes form.

REVISIT OBJECTIVE  Today’s Objective: I will understand the components of a personal narrative essay by annotating a good model of one. I will begin my personal narrative by narrowing down a topic.  Rate yourself and explain why.  Return your English binder to the shelf.  Homework: Personal Attributes form!!
