Family A group of people who are related by marriage, blood, or adoption, and who often live together and share economic resources

Today it is hard to define a typical family

Types of families 1. Nuclear Family- consists of one or both parents and their children

2. Family of orientation The nuclear family into which the person is born or adopted. Consists of the individual and his or her siblings, and parents

3. Family of Procreation Consists of the individual, his or her spouse, and their children Happens after marriage

4. Extended Family Consists of 2 or more generations Includes grandparents, parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins

Kinship A network of people who are related by marriage, birth, or adoption 3 types-primary, secondary, and tertiary

Primary Relatives Members of an individuals families of orientation and procreation Includes mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, daughter, and son

Secondary Relatives Grandparents, grandchildren, in-laws, aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces, etc. Secondary relatives add 30 more categories of people to an individual’s family

Tertiary Relatives Includes great-grandparents, great-grandchildren, great- aunts, great-uncles, and cousins This group adds 200 categories of people to an individual’s family!
