Monotheistic Religions The belief in One God

Judaism Considered the oldest monotheistic religions, it was started by Abraham. His son, Isaac, continued to spread the faith in the region. Hanukkah-celebrates the relighting of the second temple. Yom Kippur- one of the holiest days when Jews fast, pray and go to the Synagogue, the place of worship, for 25 hours. Focused on Atonement. Sabbath-day of rest.

Judaism The torah is the holy book. Jews believe that the Messiah has yet to come Holy City: Jerusalem, where the Jews built the second temple upon their return to the land. The Western Wall is all that remains. There is still conflict today over who will control over the old city in Jerusalem.

Judaism- The Western Wall

Christianity Began with the teachings of Jesus Christ, taught the people lead a good life. Was crucified by the Romans. The apostles continued to spread the faith after his death. Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus, and Easter, the crucifixion and ascension, are the holy days. Followers believe in living a life by Jesus’ example, helping and loving others.

Christianity Holy Book: The Bible Holy Place: Jerusalem, where Jesus was crucified. During the Crusades, the Pope in Rome called for the people to go fight and reclaim the Holy land (Jerusalem). If they did so, they would secure a seat in heaven for themselves.

Christianity- The Church of the Holy Sepulcher

Islam Founded by Muhammad, the prophet, who said there is one god and his name is Allah. Five Pillars of Islam – Prayer 5 times a day facing Mecca – Giving of Alms to the poor – Making one trip to the holy city of Mecca. – Fasting during Ramadan – Acknowledging that there is one god, Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet.

Islam The Koran is the holy book. The Dome on the Rock is a Holy Site, where Muhammad is believed to have ascended into heaven. Mecca: Birthplace of Muhammad Medina: burial place of Muhammad The Dome on the Rock is also believed to be the site where Abraham was ready to sacrifice his son, Isaac.
