The Food Chain By: Tiffany Short CMP/555

Standards CURRICULUM STANDARDS Ohio Standards: LIFE SCIENCES Diversity and Independence of life 3. Trace the organization of simple food chains and food webs (e.g., producers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and decomposers) 4. Summarize that organisms can survive only in ecosystems in which their needs can be met (e.g., food, water, shelter, air, carrying capacity and waste disposal). The world has different ecosystems and distinct ecosystems support the lives of different types of organisms. 5. Support how an organism's patterns of behavior are related to the nature of that organism's ecosystem, including the kinds and numbers of other organisms present, the availability of food and resources, and the changing physical characteristics of the ecosystem. TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS NETS*S Standards: 1. Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. 3. Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. 4. Students use critical-thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

Learning Objectives 1. Given teacher direction and instruction the learner will be informed about food chains and review their own background knowledge (that was previously covered) on ecosystems. 2. The learner will give attention to and participate in the SmartBoard activity for class participation and to indicate if the material that is being covered is being learned. 3. The learner will illustrate their understanding of food chains by drawing a food chain and label it appropriately for homework on a piece of notebook paper with their own choice of coloring devices as long as it is neat. When they return this activity they will go to the following website (Bodin) and transfer their food chain on there by typing and explaining why it is positioned in that particular place. This will let me know that they know a producer is first after receiving energy from the sun, then come the consumers. 4. The learner will participate in an interactive crossword puzzle online provided by the teacher at (Wong, 2005). At the bottom of this crossword there is a review called “food chains for younger students” that student’s will first review and complete activities. When they are finished with each, the teacher will come around and check their progress. 5. The learner will demonstrate their understanding of food chains by creating a brochure, newspaper, booklet, or flyer on the computer to show the information learned during this unit being given the following website: (Verizon Foundation, 2012) 6. The learner will be evaluated on their knowledge of the material through an online activity that will determine their test grade. Also, to be evaluated they will explain how humans are involved in the food chain process and determine what all could be illustrated to show this

First, Let’s Review, What is an Ecosystem? (this is a discussion so give a few seconds so that students have time to discuss, more will pop up) The plants and animals that are found in a particular location are referred to as an ecosystem. These plants and animals depend on each other to survive. In a delicate balance, these life forms help to sustain one another in regular patterns.
