 The teacher will read you the book Rabbit Surprise by Eric L. Houck, Jr.  On a separate piece of paper, write down what you think (or know) the following animals ate for breakfast this morning:  Dog?  Bear?  Rabbit?  Fox?  Raccoon?  Spider?  You? http://www.thecolor.com/images/Teacher.gif

 Food Chain: The progression in which animals eat or are eaten.  The bottom of the food chain, or lowest organism, is a plant. (Special plants like the Venus Fly Trap are exceptions to this rule!)  A food chain can also be described as how energy is passed from one organism to another. http://www.thecolor.com/images/T eacher.gif

 Carnivores only eat meat. Can you think of living things that only eat meat? http://ngfl.northumberland.gov.uk/dt/dtclip/Food_Alb/images/ meat2%20col_JPG.jpg

 Herbivores only eat plants. Can you think of living things that only eat plants? http://openclipart.org/people/rg1024/rg1024_Grass_texture.png http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2009/tarmann_sama/MCj012276 10000%5B1%5D.gif http://www.clker.com/ cliparts/6/0/6/0/1245 694766439408861john ny_automatic_tomato_p lant.svg.hi.png

 Omnivores eat both plants and meat. Can you think of living things that eat both plants and meat? http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2009/tarmann_sama/MCj012276 10000%5B1%5D.gif

 Using the book the teacher read earlier, Rabbit Surprise, and your own prior knowledge we will create a food chain.  Flip through the pages of the book with your partner. Observe what the rabbits are doing/eating throughout the story. What did you find?  In your notebook, connect the following animals in a correctly ordered food chain: Fox, Carrot, Sun, Rabbit

Sun Carrot Rabbit Fox http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/hnx/new slet/spring03/sun062clipart.jpg http://clip-art-pictures.com http://www.clipartreview.co m/_gallery/_TN/r_208.gif http://www.clipartguide.com/_small/ 1386-0903-1623-4035.jpg

 You will need: Construction paper, glue, scissors, markers, computer and a printer (optional)  Choose any animal to begin. You will then research the animal to find out what it eats, and what eats it.  You will need to either print out pictures of each animal, or organism, you want within your food chain or know how to draw it.  You will glue or draw pictures on the construction paper linking the living things in the correct order to make a food chain like we did on the previous slide.  You must have a minimum of 5 living organisms! …So if you can’t find 4 connections to the first animal you choose, PICK ANOTHER! Good Luck!!

 Grade level: 4  Subject of lesson: The Food Chain  Illinois State Science standards: 11.A.2c Construct charts and visualizations to display data. 12.B.2a Describe relationships among various organisms in their environments (e.g., predator/prey, parasite/host, food chains and food webs).  Materials: Rabbit Surprise By Eric L. Houck, Jr., computer, printer (optional), construction paper, scissors, markers and glue  Assessment – The teacher will walk around while the students are going through the PowerPoint taking anecdotal notes on what the students are answering to the various questions throughout the PowerPoint to see where their progress and understanding lies. The teacher will collect the food chains the students create out of construction paper to see if they correctly ordered the organisms.  References/Resources Used: http://faculty.tamu- commerce.edu/espinoza/s/ellis-b-lp2.html, http://www.eduref.org/Virtual/Lessons/Science/Ecology/ECL0096.htmlhttp://faculty.tamu- commerce.edu/espinoza/s/ellis-b-lp2.html http://www.eduref.org/Virtual/Lessons/Science/Ecology/ECL0096.html
