Book Summary Set in the 1940’s, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a novel that will open you up to a whole new perspective of the holocaust. Told through the eyes of a young German boy, readers can see the horrors of the holocaust along with the innocence of a young child. Nine year old Bruno is taken away from the home and friends he loves and is sent to a new house, too far for him, where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. This is all thanks to Bruno’s father, a Commandant in the German army. His father doesn’t wish this life for his children but believes that this must be done for his country. Once arriving to his new home in Poland which he calls “Out-With” Bruno has a want to explore. During one of his many explorations, he comes across a fence. This fence will change his life forever.

Book Summary At the fence, there is a boy, this boy is wearing striped pajamas that Bruno is quite jealous of. Bruno’s been curious as to what the land beyond his house holds and why there are so many people there and what they are doing, so when he comes across this boy he can’t help but ask. Bruno soon learns that terrible things are happening on the other side of the fence, things he doesn’t quite understand. He quickly becomes best friends with the boy on the other side of the fence, Shmuel, who helps him to comprehend the horrors of what’s going on. Bruno’s curiosity soon gets the best of him, and with this comes an ending that readers won’t expect.

Author John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1971 and studied at Trinity College in Dublin, and the University of East Anglia in Norwich. He has written seven novels and is currently working on his eighth. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is his fourth novel written and has won two Irish Book Awards, the Bistro Book of the Year, and a host of international awards. Not only did it win many awards, it spent eighty weeks at number one in Ireland. Worldwide it has sold more than five million copies and was the sixth highest selling novel in On top of writing seven novels, John Boyne has completed and published about seventy short stories.

Book and Film The movie and the film are very similar, minus the fact that in the movie Bruno is eight and in the book he is nine. The characters chosen for the film are very accurate and do a good job portraying the characters in the novel. The end of the movie is not the same as the end of the novel. In the novel the boys die and are lost and unheard from for a long time. In the movie, the boys are found dead very quickly. The reason they die are the same, but the film portrays it differently.
