Presidential Physical Fitness Test PPFT Presidential Physical Fitness Test

The Purpose To promote healthy lifestyles and encourage physical activity. Recognize American youth for achieving outstanding levels of physical fitness. More than 4 million youth to take part in the President’s Challenge each year.

What Influenced Physical Fitness Test? Important issue in U.S. –   war influenced physical fitness programs in schools Physical Testing revealed U.S. children less fit than European children –   Eisenhower forms President’s Council on Youth Fitness  AAHPER – develops “Youth Fitness” tests with National norms Korean War – significant coronary artery disease in autopsies of young men

  “poor health habits more responsible for more deaths than infectious disease”1980’s Healthy People 2010 – established clear goals to improve health of country Physical education includes more scientifically based understanding of exercise expansion of “Physical Education” to include “Exercise Science”

GCIT’s Goal The Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Department at GCIT strongly believes that a proper fitness program enhances student’s performance throughout their academic career Is for the students to use this fitness program upon graduation for a lifetime goal of exercising Our program is now called FITNESS FOR LIFE, no longer Health and PE

Areas of Fitness Fitness-the ability to perform daily activities without undue fatigue Our fitness program emphasizes on five different areas of fitness, which include flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, strength, power and agility.

V-Sit Reach V-sit reach-This event measures flexibility of the lower back and hamstrings. Your score: Negative=how many inches until your even with the bottom of your feet Zero=even with feet Positive number=how many inches you reached past your feet.

Endurance Run / Walk (one-mile) This event measures heart and lung endurance. Students are timed in the mile run

Sit-up / Curl-up This event measures abdominal strength and endurance. Students will perform as many sit ups as they can for 60 seconds

Shuttle Run This event measures speed, quickness and agility This is a timed event

Pull ups / Flexed Arm Hang This event measures upper body strength and endurance Students perform pull ups, chin ups and / or the flexed arm hang

The Presidential Physical Fitness Award This award recognizes students who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness. Boys and girls who score at or above the 85th percentile (based on the 1985 School Population Fitness Survey) on all five events are eligible for this award.

Presidential Scores

The National Physical Fitness Award Students who score above the 50th percentile on all five events - demonstrating a basic, yet challenging, level of physical fitness - are eligible for this award.
