“VICTORY ON THE BATTLEFIELD WILL NOT COME FROM HOARDING SUPPLIES AND DEMANDING CORRECT PAPERWORK AND PROPER JUSTIFICATION BEFORE PROVIDING SUPPORT. THE ONLY RESULT OF SUCH BUREAUCRATIC INACTION IS DEAD SOLDIERS, WHO RECEIVED TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.” MAJ JOHN E. EDWARDS SOLDIERS OF STEEL “LOGISTICS IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE ARMIES.” GEN DENNIS J. REIMER Joint Chief of Staff of the Army

EDWARDS SOLDIERS OF STEEL

n Purpose of this briefing: – To define CSS – Identify CSS Classes – To inform the chain of command the proper CSS procedures n i.e.: report and conduct of CSS procedures COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n The Sources: – FM – FKSM Tank Platoon SOP – “Combat Service Support Guide” n by MAJ John E. Edwards, 1989

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n CSS Defined: – A means of “arming, fueling, fixing, feeding, and clothing combat forces on the battlefield” with an end-state mission of “supporting and sustaining the combat power of an army.”

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n To accomplish the mission, CSS requires: – proper procedures n prevents redundancies – accurate data n prevents too much or too little requisitions – “consistent application of valid support concepts and principles” COMBAT SUPPORT n SOPs provide quick reactions, quick requisitions and thus: quick COMBAT SUPPORT

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n Logistic Classes: – Class I: Food subsistence – Class II: Clothing, Tentage, Tool Sets, Individual Equipment – Class III: Fuel, Petroleum, Oil, & Lubricants (POL) – Class IV: Barrier Materials (Barbed wires, lumber, concrete, etc.) – Class V: Ammunitions – Class VI: Personal Demands/Effects – Class VII: End Items (tanks, trucks, weapons, & power units) – Class VIII: Medical Supplies – Class IX: Repair Parts – Class X: Civil Affairs Items

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n As you plan to conduct CSS: – You must plan your class orders in advance to prevent shortages in combat type situations. – You must coordinate for LOGPAC locations, conditions, and times. – Pay strict attention to details. n ie.: If you are planning a LOGPAC for infantry soldiers, do not provide tanker LOGPAC; plan accordingly.

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n Three types of Resupply: – PRESTOCK – ROUTINE – EMERGENCY – Using two methods: n TAILGATE n SERVICE STATION

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n CSS reports: – Yellow 1: Equipment Status Report (ESTAT) – Yellow 2: Ammo Status Report n Yellow 2A: Ammo requests – Yellow 3: POL Status Report n Yellow 3A: POL requests n NOTE: Refer to FKSM , Chap. C-12 for proper designators, lines, and formats as each circumstance dictate appropriate reports

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n Conducting routine CSS: – PSG coordinates with 1SG for LOGPAC linkup – Platoon, or other elements, provide security based on the CDR’s guidance – LOGPAC is disseminated tactically as environment dictates – PSG coordinates with 1SG for further requirements – PL keeps CDR informed on LOGPAC status

SOLDIERS OF STEEL COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT n CSS NCOPD in review: – Defined CSS – Discussed CSS requirements – Provided Logistics Classes – Provided considerations when coordinating for LOGPAC – Discussed general CSS Report & Conduct procedures
