“The Lord Said to My Lord…” Psalm 110

The LORD Said to my Lord (vs. 1) David speaks with hope! LORD (YHWH) said to my Lord (Adonai) “Sit at My right hand…”

The LORD Said to my Lord (vs. 1) Clearly Messianic Matt. 22:42-46 (Mark 12:35-37, Lk. 20:42-43) Jesus declares that the Messiah (who would descend from David) by his own (David’s) acknowledgment would be greater than him. HOW would that be possible? Jesus is declaring Himself (as the Son of God) greater than David OR predating Him (i.e. God – Immanuel)

The LORD Said to my Lord (vs. 1) Clearly Messianic Acts 2:34,35 On Pentecost, Peter declares Jesus the fulfillment of this by having been raised from the dead and having ascended to heaven.

The LORD Said to my Lord (vs. 1) Clearly Messianic Heb. 1:13 Describing Jesus, the writer says He is greater than the angels, because our psalm is spoken in reference to Him. Cf. Heb. 10:11-14, 1:3

The LORD Said to my Lord (vs. 1) Clearly Messianic The “right hand of God” – Jesus is NOW reigning Luke 22:69 Acts 2:33, 5:31, 7:55-56 Romans 8:34, Eph. 1:20, Col. 3:1 Heb. 1:3, 8:1, 12:2 1 Peter 3:22

The Rod of Your Strength (vs. 2-3) The LORD would send Him out of Zion “The rod of Your strength” From David? Cf. Isa. 11:1 Out of Zion – Acts 2

The Rod of Your Strength (vs. 2-3) He will rule in the midst of Your enemies A spiritual kingdom John 18:36, Luke 17:21 NOTE: This reign would be with enemies around. That contradicts premillenial thought of a utopian reign of Christ.

The Rod of Your Strength (vs. 2-3) Your people shall be volunteers Salvation is available to all 1 Tim. 2:4, Gal. 3:27-28 “In the beauty of holiness, from the womb of the morning”… Possibly the growth of the kingdom (Ac. 2:41, 4:4, Matt. 13:31-33)

The Lord has sworn and will not relent! Melchizedek (vs. 4) The Lord has sworn and will not relent! The LORD promised to raise up a prophet, and He ALWAYS keeps His promises Heb. 6:18

He is Lord and Priest (forever) Melchizedek (vs. 4) He is Lord and Priest (forever) Thus one would be raised who could FULLY accommodate the people. HOW?

Also quoted in the New Testament – Heb. 7:17, 20, 5:6, etc. Melchizedek (vs. 4) Melchizedek Also quoted in the New Testament – Heb. 7:17, 20, 5:6, etc. HOW?

Mentioned 9 times in Heb. 5-7 Melchizedek (vs. 4) Melchizedek Mentioned 9 times in Heb. 5-7 The point of the writer is that Jesus is our High Priest, but NOT after the Levitical order.

Melchizedek (vs. 4) Jesus was of Judah He could NOT serve as a priest on earth. His priesthood was different. Melchizedek – Gen. 14:18 a priest of the Most High God, Heb. 7:1-3 – without genealogy, beginning or end, thus a perpetual priesthood A priesthood GREATER than Levi (cf. Heb. 7:4-10, esp. 7)

Melchizedek (vs. 4) SINCE Jesus is High Priest… There had to be a change of the Law (cf. Heb. 7:11-28, 8:7-13) ALL THIS goes back to a prophecy made by David about 1000 years earlier!

The Lord at Your right hand (5-7) The Lord will carry out His will. A picture of judgment (John 12:47-48, 5:22-23) The wicked will be punished (including kings) Vs. 7, He will not cease until He is finished (cf. 1 Cor. 15:24-26)

Is Jesus your Lord and your Priest?
