Studies in the Book of Psalms Lesson 19: Psalm 110 “The Dominion of the Priest – King”

2 Introduction to Psalm 110 A Davidic Psalm
Written from the perspective of one who overhears a conversation between God the Father and God the Son (110:1) A Messianic Psalm that focuses on the power and position of the Messiah He is King AND Priest! Often quoted in the New Testament, its truths support many New Testament truths.

3 Establishing the King’s Rule Psalm 110:1-3
THE CORONATION: The LORD takes charge of subduing the Messiah’s enemies (110:1) THE CONQUEST: The “rod” of strength (i.e. the gospel) by which the Messiah will rule is sent out of Zion. (110:2; 45:6; Isaiah 2:3) THE CONQUERORS: The willing volunteer army that wields the Lord’s power (110:3)

4 The Oath of God Psalm 110:4 The LORD has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” An oath of God provides the utmost surety (Hebrews 6:16-17)

5 The Reign of the Priest-King Psalm 110:5-7
A reign of judgment and wrath against enemies of the King (110:5-6; 2:9-12; Isaiah 11:4) A reign of refreshment and hope for the King and His followers (110:7)

Verse one is quoted or referred to five times in the New Testament Matthew 22:41-46 The Christ is not only the Son of David, but also the Son of God Note “the LORD said unto my Lord” (i.e. Jehovah said to my Adonai) David was “in the Spirit” (inspired) (Act 2:30; 1:16; 2 Sam. 23:2; 2 Peter 1:21) Acts 2:34-35 The Christ was raised from the dead to sit on David’s throne. (Acts 2:30-31)

Verse one is quoted or referred to five times in the New Testament Hebrews 1:13 Christ is superior to the angels. 1 Corinthians 15:27-28 All things are placed under Christ’s feet (except the Father Himself) (Eph. 1:20-23; Philippians 2:9-11) Hebrews 10:12-13 Our High Priest needed to offer only one sacrifice and then He sat down as King.

Verse four is quoted four times, all in Hebrews 5-7. Hebrews 5:4-10 Jesus did not glorify Himself to become High Priest; the Lord appointed Him! Hebrews 6:20 As High Priest, Christ has gone into the presence of God for us. (Heb.10:21-22) Hebrews 7:15-25 Christ’s priesthood is eternal Hebrews 7:11-14 The new priesthood required a new Law.
