What is a transformation al servant leader …..and how do I become one?

The goal of the presentation is: To provide reliable and relevant information about transformational servant leadership To extrinsically motivate you to be a transformational servant leader To inspire you to become a successful and significant person, and To encourage you to apply this knowledge in the context wherein you serve

Definitions Transformational leadership is a style of leadership where the leader is charged with identifying the needed change, creating a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executing the change in tandem with committed members of the group

Definitions Servant Leadership - the servant- leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible

Leadership is not only leading from the front; you can also lead from behind

Transformational Leadership Avolio, Waldman, and Yammarino (1991) established four primary behaviors that constitute transformational leadership: 1) idealized influence (or charismatic influence), 2) inspirational motivation, 3) intellectual stimulation, and 4) individualized consideration

Idealized influence. Leaders would not expect others to do what he/she is not willing to do themselves. The Leader becomes role models who are admired, respected, and emulated by followers. Consequently, followers demonstrate a high degree of trust in such leaders. Idealized influence in leadership also involves integrity in the form of ethical and moral conduct. Transformational leaders are also willing to take and share risks with followers (Avolio & Bass, 2002; Bass, 1998).

Inspirational motivation. Transformational leaders inspire and motivate others by "providing meaning and challenge to their followers' work" (Avolio & Bass, 2002, p. 2). The spirit of the team is "aroused" while "enthusiasm and optimism are displayed". The transformational leader builds relationships with followers through interactive communication. The leader inspires followers to see the attractive future, while communicating expectations and demonstrating a commitment to goals and a shared vision.

Intellectual stimulation. Transformational leaders stimulate their followers' efforts "to be innovative and creative by questioning assumptions, reframing problems, and approaching old situations in new ways" (Avolio & Bass, 2002, p. 2). Followers’ mistakes are not publicly criticized and creativity is openly encouraged. Transformational leaders solicit their followers' ideas and creative solutions to problems, thereby including followers in problem solving. The intellectually stimulating leader encourages followers to try new approaches but emphasizes rationality (Bass, 1990b).

Individualized consideration. The transformational leader disburses personal attention to followers based on the individual follower's needs for achievement and growth. To do this, the leader acts as a mentor or coach developing followers in a supportive climate to "higher levels of potential.” The considerate leader recognizes and demonstrates acceptance of the followers’ individual differences in terms of needs and desires. By doing this, the transformational leader fosters two-way communication through effective listening. The leader develops followers by delegating tasks and then unobtrusively monitoring those tasks--checking to see if additional support or direction is needed.

There are 5 factors worth mastering in the function of transformational servant leadership

T ransformationa l S ervant L eadership The PEOPLE Factor

Altruism – the ability of giving of ourselves without expecting anything in return Trust- can people trust you? Can God trust you? Understanding the Value of others

T ransformationa l S ervant L eadership The ISSACHAR Factor

I Chronicles 12:32: And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. What is the Issachar Factor – the ability to understand the signs of their times, analyze the best possible course to take and guide others in what they ought to do

Why is the Issachar factor important to leadership – because we need leaders who knows the Word of God, understand the signs of the times and prepare us for what is ahead in this world. As a body we need Spiritual Guidance. In Matthew 16:3, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and Sadducees by saying “But He replied to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' 3"And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?”

In Genesis 1:14, God created the Sun, Moon and Stars and said of them, “The Fourth Day: Sun, Moon, Stars - Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years.”

T ransformationa l S ervant L eadership The POWER Factor

What is power – the dictionary describes power as “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.” When power is placed in your hands, how do you treat with it? Can you manage power? Can God trust you with power?

T ransformationa l S ervant L eadership The Kingdom Factor

It is not about denomination; it is about the Kingdom of God. This is the bigger picture. Denomination is what holds or membership, Kingdom is what holds our Eternal, - our lifestyle; our very existence, our future, our eternal.

T ransformationa l S ervant L eadership The SPIRIT Factor

This makes all the difference, this is the point where we separate from world leaders. This world has a large supply of successful world leaders, what it lacks however, is transformational servant leaders led by the Spirit of God The Spirit factor is the very presence, the very Spirit of God, who resurrected Jesus from the dead, this very Spirit living in us.

Success and Significance – John Maxwell says “ Success is adding value to yourself, Significance is adding value to others.” When you practice transformational servant leadership – You influence others to make positive change You motivate them to fulfill their purpose You stimulate them to share their goals and visions, and You teach them to lead others
