Individual Differences: Gender Physical differences Physique (body size and shape): Women tend to be smaller. Women have a flatter, broader pelvis. Women have smaller lungs and heart (lower oxygen carrying capacity). Women have a higher percentage of fat. Women have less muscle mass. Individual Differences: Gender How does gender effect performance in Artistic Gymnastics? What apparatus do the men and women use to perform their routines? Why?

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Routines are performed on six pieces of apparatus: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. The sport requires all round fitness through: strength, mobility, endurance, flexibility, body control and co-ordination.

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Routines are performed on 4 pieces of apparatus: Vault, uneven bars, beam and floor. The sport demands body control, body awareness, suppleness, stamina, coordination, amplitude and courage.

What allowances are made for women in this activity? How many sets do women and men play in the majors. Women play best of 3 sets. Men play best of 5 sets

Why can girls and boys play for the same football team at primary school? Why are males and females judged against a criteria and not against each other in GCSE PE practical lessons? List activities where women compete directly against men. Ext. Can you suggest reasons why?

Sexual discrimination “It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems” "She shouldn't be here. I know that sounds sexist but I am sexist. This is not park football, so what are women doing here?" Mike Newell (Football manager).

Discrimination Discrimination has often meant that women are seen as the ‘weaker sex’ and not allowed the same opportunities as men. Many sports have been seen as traditionally male, it is not until just recently their has been a surge in female players to make it the fastest growing sport Some women may also find that their religion forbids them taking part fully in sport.
