Advancing an Open Source Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Ecosystem Open Health Tools New Charter Presentation Mario G. Hyland Senior Vice President AEGIS.net, Inc. September 27, 2013

Concept Drive EHR advancement towards an Open Source Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Environment (Ecosystem) that will enable the development of loosely coupled integrated solutions (such as modernized workflow oriented applications) Bring wider community involvement by engaging vendors to support newer technology paradigms Certification & Accreditation – Crowd Source Open Source Certification 2

Current SOA Challenges Understanding the complex health workflow and business rules environment – Will require close working relationship with provider organization personnel Understanding the benefits derived from true SOA implementations (open interface agreements) Funding a disruptive technology Engage and excite the community to contribute Completing work-segments within months in order to keep momentum. 3

Assumptions/Risks Keep the project team(s) small (4-6 members) Lower barrier to engage At least one provider organization participate in the project – DoD, VA, NHS, Mayo etc. Funding in the form of grants, in-kind labor etc. be realized within 60 days of project start

Next Steps Create Consortium of Partners Develop Project Plan Establish OHT Charter “an EHR Ecosystem” a green solution to the future of EHR 9
