Experiences from peer group training of wheelchair users

disability: historical perspective in general disability is viewed as a tragic, life threatening/ending event in particular, disabled people are: ◦ Powerless ◦ Voiceless ◦ Denied access to basic services ◦ Denied societal participation ◦ Isolated ◦ Discriminated

the challenge  factors affecting those with a SCI and mobility disabilities in low-income countries:  limited understanding of their disability  little or no understanding of potentially fatal health issues such as urinary tract infections and pressure sores  poor mobility skills  no role models  low confidence  discrimination within society

peer group training  What is it? Peer Group Training (PGT) is peer to peer training amongst wheelchair users in mobility, health and independent living skills  Who are the trainers? It involves experienced, healthy and active wheelchair users passing on their skills and knowledge to others  Who is it for? People with spinal cord injuries and other mobility disabilities  What is the impact of PGT? PGT improves survival rates and quality of life

PGT contexts  PGT can be delivered in the following contexts: Hospital or spinal unit essential for early intervention providing a role model from the outset and motivation to move forward Home visit addresses lack of transport for those requiring PGT Wheelchair services combining the provision of appropriate mobility equipment with essential skills and knowledge Residential camp bringing together 15 – 20 people for comprehensive PGT
