Strategies that Enhance Activity Questions Reframing Positive Predicting Planning

Supportive Questioning  Why is that important to you?  What does that goal, activity, interest, dream say about you? Who you are as a person.  What will it feel like when you have that?  What will you do differently when you reach that?  What can you do today to make that dream come true?  What else is important to you?  Tell me how this image plays out?  What can this lead to?  Who else knows about this interest/dream/passion?  Who can help you realize this dream/goal/interest?

Reframing  Youth who have difficult time expressing their feelings/hopes/dreams: “I think you are very thoughtful and careful about what you say and that is a good quality” “I think you are a very loyal person and that makes you special.”  Youth unable to express future goals or vision: “Good that you can be in the present, and there is nothing bad about that. You can make today great by putting y our attention on the here and now.”

Positive Predicting  How will you feel when…  How will we celebrate when…  What will it be like for people who care about you when… Planning o What can you do today to help you achieve this? o What do you think a person who has achieved this did when he/she was 30 years old, 20 years old, 10 years old. o “If You Choose ___ then You’ve Chosen ___ ” statements

Discovering the Possibilities Toolkit 12 Lessons Grouped into 3 Sections (1) Exploring Careers: “I See My Future”: These modules encourage mentees to learn about themselves and to apply that knowledge to the exploration of careers (2) Preparing for College: “I See My Options”: This section provides an introduction to college, exposing mentees to new possibilities and encouraging them to fulfill their dreams (3) Building Character: “I See Myself”: This section focuses on building concrete skills that are essential for success in post-secondary education.

Highlighted Activities I See My Future (pg.5): Creating a “vision board” of their future vision of self. Serves as the foundation for the toolkit. Self-awareness starts with imagining life and reflecting on who you are. Do I Need it or Do I Want it?(pg 7): Learning the difference between personal needs and wants and considering this as it relates to career experiences and working environments. Is College For Me?(pg 13): Dispelling myths about what it takes to go to college. Filling the void of basic information that may exist while also setting the record straight.
