3 I teach a SAT/College Readiness Class after school at Foothill High School. I wanted to create an internet-based lesson that students could complete individually (with some guidance from me) or that I could use as part of my class. I have access to a computer lab after school so computer access was no problem. In general terms I wanted the class to dig up information on:

4 More specifically; Students will use the internet to complete activities in order to achieve the following goals:

5 What I hoped to get from CTAP 295 an internet lesson I could use in my class improve my limited computer skills knowledge on how to set up internet lessons students could work on individually

7 Problems and Successes students need help interpreting information students need to know more before they start project may be more appropriate for junior year need time in between for more discussion needs to be part of a larger portfolio PROBLEMS

8 Problems and Successes Students learn a great deal in a short time it makes the transition process real it puts responsibility on the student it jump starts students going to a 2-year college students can do this as an independent project or part of another class SUCCESSES

12 Reflections and Revisions Students did not understand basic definitions needed to complete task Students need help comprehending information on some sites Student anxiety about the college process is significantly reduced when the portfolio is complete Students need to be provided with a review of important terms Teacher needs to be available to translate some information for students Students need to be encouraged to begin this process earlier so they will have more choices available

13 Students have many concerns about leaving high school to go to college. We expect student to be able to make decisions in this area with very little information or practice. National counseling standards require students be fully informed and ready to make choices. The internet is a wonderful tool to use with a class or an individual student to help them discover that they can take control of the process.

14 When I began thinking about this lesson I started with the idea that the standards said students should be prepared to make a decision but did not say how. I realized that I wanted to create a lesson that could be used in the classroom or as an individual tutorial. The best way to prepare students for this process seemed to be to have them go through the process.
