Tips to Help You Find the Most Relevant Information FAST Many of these tips will work for database searches too!

1. Keep it simple! Every word counts Be short but descriptive Use words that will appear on the web page Possible Searches: families in Iran family life in Iran women in Iran children in Iran Iranian families

2. Some words/symbols are not even searched! a and so for the to punctuation marks. ?, ; :

3. Google is case insensitive! FAMILY LIFE IRAN

4. Do not ask questions! Type: family life iran What is family life like in Iran?

5. Put phrases/titles in quotations. ! “family life” Iran

Book title: “my life in iran” book

6. Use a minus sign (-) to exclude! “family life” iran -food

For info about the bird, not football: falcons -football

7. Google assumes the word and between words! women iran

8. Use OR (in caps) to search for either one of several words! women OR children iran

9. Find results in a specific domain! Use site:edu (or org, gov, net, mil). “family life” iran site:edu

11. Find results in a specific format! Use filetype:ppt (doc, pdf) “family life” iran filetype:ppt

12.Find out who links to a site to see if it is a credible source! link: Use link:pasteURL

If you want more… Use * to fill in the blanks: Use ~ to search for a word and its synonyms: famil*Searches family, families psych*Searches psychology, psychiatrist(s), psychologist(s) iran ~glossarySearches for glossary, dictionary, terms, terminology for Iran
