3 KEYWORD(S) SEARCHING Tip One: Use synonyms  IE: teacher= instructor, professor, mentor Tip Two: Phrase searching  Using quotation marks or parenthesis to keep words together IE: “school teacher” (swimming instructor) Tip Three: Boolean searching  Using AND, OR, and NOT to indicate relationships (Michael Jordan) and (Chicago Bulls)

4 KEYWORD(S) SEARCHING Tip Four:Find command  This command locates and highlights keywords or search terms in the Web page that are typed into the Find search bar, acting as a mini-index for the page. “Control F”

5 KEYWORD(S) SEARCHING Tip Five: Site Restrictions  Allows you to restrict the searching to certain domain types Site:govsite:edu.org Non-profit organization.com Commercial.net Network or net provider.edu Education.gov Government.mil military

6 I’m there…now what? Check for CREDIBILITY… Who is the author of the page? What are his/her qualifications? Look for an “author” page or “about the author”. If nothing, check for a Webmaster or the date the site was last updated. EDU & GOV domains are known to be high quality and authoritative.

7 How can you tell? Currency—Check the bottom of the homepage for publication date. Check for a “last updated” date. See if the site offers a works cited list. Use a reliable source!

12 Final considerations Is it C 2 ? Now that you’ve found your source, take notes. AVOID PLAGIARISM!  Write in list format  Read once, then pick up pencil to record OWN thoughts on topic.  Ask for help with concepts you don’t understand. USE CITATIONS!
