The Internet Do you really know what is out there?

Ok, some vocab Internet - A global network connecting millions of computers. World Wide Web - A system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents. Website - A site (location) on the World Wide Web. Webpage - A document on the World Wide Web. Every Web page is identified by a unique URL (Uniform Resource Locator).

Let’s Think Is the Internet and the World Wide Web the same thing? –Look at the definitions closely –Not all Internet servers are part of the World Wide Web. –World Wide Web is not synonymous with the Internet. (webopedia)

Another thought What is the difference between a website and a webpage? –It is simple…webpages make up a website

Using the Internet How do you find information on the Internet? –just “google it”, right? Well, it’s not really that simple. You can “google it”, but you will find way too much information. Lets explore some more information about search engines….. “Google It” (searching with Google.com)

Search Engines What is a search engine? –A search engine is a type of software that creates indexes of databases or Internet sites based on the titles of files, keywords, or the full text of files. (learnthenet) –So, we use a search engine to find other webpages…that makes sense.

Only Google? What are some examples of search engines? –Google –Yahoo –Altavista –Dogpile –The list goes on and on

Which one? Which search engine do I use? –That is up to you and your topic. One might not be better than another, but there are some tips that you need to know about search engines. –You know you love tips and tricks! So continue on….

Why are there so many pages? How do I narrow my search? –Boolean operators The Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT (or AND NOT), and NEAR tell search engines which keywords you want your results to include or exclude, and whether you require that your keywords appear close to each other. –Use a Web directory a search service that arranges the web pages it knows about into categories and subcategories.

How did all that stuff get there? How does information get on the Internet? –It is a process of publishing the information on the Internet – anyone can do it – if you have the knowledge (and sometimes $$$) –Webpages, Wikis, Blogs, and more

Believe it or not? If anyone can put information on the Internet, should we believe everything we read? –No, no, no….do not believe everything you read –It could be incorrect or just outdated How do I know what is correct? –I am going to tell you…..

Believe it if….. Ask yourself these questions: 1.Who wrote the pages and is the author an expert? 2.What does the author say is the purpose of the site? 3.When was the site created and last updated? 4.Where does the information come from? 5.Why is the information useful for my purpose?

WOW I thought I knew about the Internet…. but I was wrong I think I can do more than just “google it” now
