Mise-en-scene in R&B/POP

Clothing - Men Male R&B and POP clothing can be very versatile as the images show. Many artists tend to be pictured topless, however other artists of this genre wear very outgoing colourful clothes and some suit it up with a suit and tie. This is because there are various styles of R&B and POP genres hence why we see the versatility of clothing styles within this genre. Topless: Various R&B and POP artists are pictured topless. For example Trey Songz, Usher and Justin Bieber are both pictured in topless clothing this is because a lot male R&B and POP artists target market are teenage girls. Casual look: Other R&B artists go for a causal day to day look, however this consists of brightly coloured clothes in order for then to stand out, like the image of Tine Tempah. Jeans: When these artists are pictured topless they are usually wearing jeans that hang low so their boxers are on show. Accessories & Jewellery: Many R&B and POP male artists wear subtle jewellery like a watch, an earing or small gold chain. They also tend to wear sunglasses and caps as this maintains the R&B and POP genre as being powerful and ‘swaggy’. Tattoos: A lot of R&B and POP artists have tattoos, the majority of the time they are on their chest and arms. It emphasises their masculinity along with their muscular figures.

Clothing - Female Like male clothing, R&B and POP female artists are again versatile in what they wear. The majority of artists wear minimal clothing, however other artists wear flatting tops that aren’t as revealing. Minimal clothing: Many R&B and POP artists are pictured wearing very minimal clothing like in the images of Beyoncé and Rihanna. This is because they are seen as desirable to their male fans and having lots of flesh on show is normal for this genre of music. Hair and Make-up: Female R&B and POP artist tend to have simple but dramatic hair that makes a statement. They usually have long hair as it is seen as an iconic feature that is dominant within this genre. The long hair hides the fact that some artists wear very minimal clothing and again is admirable to their male audience. Their makeup is bold and defined especially around the eyes, with the use of black eyeliner and brow eye shadows as it makes them look more powerful. Jewellery: They tend to wear lots of subtle jewellery but not too much so that it looks overdone and ‘chavy’. Bracelets, necklaces and rings are often worn on female R&B and POP artists as it stylizes their image. My music magazine will feature my friend Sara on the front cover. She will be wearing clothing that shows some flesh whether it is a crop top or a top which hangs of the shoulder because I want to maintain the R&B and POP style of clothing as my magazine is of this genre. Her make- up will be defined by the use of black eyeliner and bright lipstick and blush to create a powerful strong look. Which relates to my chosen style of magazine.

Props R&B and POP magazine covers don’t tend to use many props, the main source of props are from the accessories in which are stylised onto the artists, like jewellery and makeup for women, and caps and other male accessories for men. For example: The prop used in this magazine is the black cap. This creates an R&B look as these type of artists tend to wear caps. This prop is simple but looks effective. Many R&B and POP magazines are close up shots therefore no prop is really needed. Rihanna’s earrings and strong make-up is the only prop featured on the cover. This long shot of Beyoncé again has no props featured. It appears to be that this genre of music magazines don’t need props in order to create the R&B and POP look. Therefore my magazine cover will not feature any props as my style models don’t use props and these magazines don’t use props either. Also I will use a medium close up shot so I don’t want the mise-en-scene to be too overpowering.
