The Miracles of Jesus Lesson 19: Healing the Daughter of the Syro-Phoenician Woman Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30

Tyre and Sidon are ancient Phoenician sister cities on the Mediterranean coast. These cities are objects of prophecy and are often mentioned together (Jeremiah 47:4; Zechariah 9:2-4; Luke 10:13-14)

This aerial view of Tyre shows the modern city built on the causeway made by Alexander the Great. (cf. Ezekiel 26:4-5)

Jesus entered a house seeking seclusion. Details of Healing the Daughter of the Syro-Phoenician Woman -- Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30 Jesus entered a house seeking seclusion. A woman of Canaan locates Jesus and begs Him for mercy on behalf of her daughter who is demon possessed Mark describes her as “Greek” but “Syro-Phoenician” by birth She addresses Jesus as “Lord -- Son of David” (Mt. 15:22)

Obstacles to This Miracle Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30 Racial prejudice separated Jew from Gentile (cf. Acts 18:1-2; 21:28; 22:19-23) The disciples’ attitude toward the woman (Matthew 15:23; Luke 9:51ff) Jesus was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel (Matthew 15:24; 10:5-6; John 4:19-24) Demon possession was a gripping and horrifying tool of Satan.

How Obstacles were Overcome How Obstacles were Overcome Lessons for Us -- Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30 The persistence of the woman (Matthew 15:23, 25; Mark 7:26; cf. Luke 11:5-9) The respect the woman had for Jesus (Matt.15:22, 25) The humility of the woman (Mark 7:25, 27-29; Mt.15:26-27; 1 Pet. 5:5-6; Ps. 18:27) The faith of the woman (Matthew 15:28) The power and compassion of the Son of God (Mk. 7:30)
