Setting The setting in the beginning of the story takes place in Hawaii. The setting changed after Robie’s plane flight to the Midway Atoll crashed into the Pacific Ocean. After that she paddled to a remote island in a raft.

Plot In the beginning of the story Robie went to get her nose pierced so she had to stay out of the water for a month. Her parents live and work on the Midway Atoll. Robie was visiting her Aunt Jillian’s apartment in Hawaii for the summer. Aunt Jillian got a call and had to leave for L.A. to work. This left Robie home by herself. She was attacked that day by a strange man. She ran back to the apartment sobbing. That’s when she decided to get on a plane to Midway to see her parents. The plane was going on a supply run but when she got there she noticed that there was a new co-pilot named Max. The G1 plane can only hold 3,800 pounds of cargo and people because if an engine fails one engine could still power the plane. Sine the usual supply organizer was sick that day they didn’t weigh Robie or her bags. The nighttime flight started out normal but soon a storm came in.

Plot An engine failed and the plane crashed into the ocean. Robie thought she was going to die. She swam to the raft. They had no water and only a bag of skittles for food. After several days on the ocean they spotted an island! She got on the island and struggled to survive. Robie kept thinking about if she would ever return home safely. None of her family even knew she had taken the plane flight. One day the NOAA came to check out the island. They had no clue what they would find there. They rescued Robie. She was brought home safely and reunited with her family.

Conflict The conflict in the story was the struggle for survival. Robie had to fight nature to survive. She also had to overcome her own weaknesses and find her strength. The conflict ended when she survived long enough to be rescued and she was brought home safe at last.

Theme There are a couple themes in this novel. One of the themes is to never give up even if it’s really hard to succeed. Robie found the strength to survive. Another theme is to not doubt yourself. Robie thought she might not get off the island and die but she was able to make some hard decisions to live.

Main Characters Robie is a normal 14 year old girl who gets stranded on the ocean and on an island after a plane crash. Her parents are scientists and work on Midway island. She visits her aunt in Hawaii. She’s not with her parents because they are usually at work on Midway and she gets bored. Max was the co-pilot on the plane that went down. Max gave Robie a life vest and raft and saved her life. Back at his home he kept a therapy journal to help him. Reading this journal helped Robie survive being stranded.

I would recommend The Raft to a friend because it was an intense book with a lot of emotion and it had a mysterious twist. When I started reading it I didn’t want to stop. The book was so good that I wanted to know more about what happened to Robie after the story ended. It really made me think. Read the book The Raft! Book Recommendations
