35’ Ladder Beam Raise Two Person Level I 4/1/12

Introduction This presentation demonstrates the basic operation for a two person beam raise. The evolution begins with ladders and tools on the engine. The scenario calls for one/two saws and a rubbish hook along with the 35’ extension ladder.

Ladder Basics Tip to sill for rescue, entry or RIC Tip to top of windward side for breaking glass Three rungs above the roof for roof operations Fly in for all operations One person per section Duo-Safety ladders are rated for 750 lbs, 4% reduction for fly in operations= 720 lbs.

Ladder Removal and Tool Placement Saw(s) are placed so that: 1.They are parallel to the ladder. 2.One side step from ladder. 3.In the proper position (saw on it’s side bar towards the tip).

Ladder Removal and Tool Placement One person on the tip and one person on the butt. Low shoulder carry. Hand on lower beam. Butt person gives all commands.

Saw Pickup The ladder team uses the command “saw” to gather saws. Person(s) carrying saw dips to gather saw(s). The team is now ready to travel to the intended destination.

Ladder Travel Commands ‘ladder coming through’ and ‘ladder coming around’ should be used to safely alert others on the fire ground of your presence.

Dropping Saws The command ‘saw’ is used to drop saws. The ladder team dips in stride to drop the saw(s) prior to arriving at the building. Saws are dropped well in advance allowing the team to recover any lost momentum.

Arms Length/High Shoulder Carry Prior to arriving at the building the team members adjust their carry. First the butt person drops to an arms length carry then the tip person raises to a high shoulder carry. Travel should not stop or slow. Butt person selects a point to stick the ladder prior to arriving at the building.

Raising the Ladder Butt person pivots clockwise while simultaneously placing right foot on beam. Butt person places right foot on butt/spurs while counterbalancing the weight of ladder. Tip person then immediately begins raising the ladder maintaining all momentum.

Raising the Ladder Butt person guides the ladder using the inside of the right leg. Tip person walks the ladder up hand over hand.

Extending the Ladder Rotate the ladder parallel to the building before the second spur hits the ground. Butt person controls and directs rotation. Tip person removes the roof hook. Tip person prepares to extend ladder.

Extending the Ladder Butt person stabilizes the bed section with their back towards the building. Ensure proper foot placement using the inside arch on the outside of opposing beams. Tip person states fingers and toes. Tip person extends the fly section(s) by drawing the halyard in a continuous hand over hand motion. Tip person states “dogs locked,” (both sets) for 2 fly ladders.

Laddering the Building Tip person slowly lowers the ladder into the building. Hands flat on outside of beams. Tip person stabilizes the ladder with a boot on the first rung. Tip person indicates distance from building.

Ladder Adjustment The ladder is adjusted holding the 2 nd and 5 th rungs. Butt movement should stay between members’ feet. Tip person looking up butt person looking down (members must verbalize looking up and looking down). The ladder should be at approximately 75 degrees with four points of contact.

Footing the Ladder One foot on the heel with two hands on the beams. Watching overhead.

Laddering Away Tip person places one foot on the bottom rung. Pull/push ladder away. Tip person indicates when ladder is fully upright by stating “vertical”.

Retracting the Ladder Same positions and commands as raising the ladder (fingers and toes). Once fully retracted rotate the ladder on spur. perpendicular to building so that the bed section is on the firefighters right side. Butt person directs rotation. Ladder should always be carried on the bed side.

Lowering the Ladder Butt person confirms there are no obstructions behind and states “Clear”. Butt person places right foot on butt/spurs while counterbalancing the weight of ladder. Butt person calls distance to tip. Tip person lowers by walking out the beam.

Travel Away Butt and tip persons transition into a low shoulder carry. Commands ‘ladder coming through’ and ‘ladder coming around’ should be used to safely alert others on the fire ground of your presence.
